Error codes

# Wine cellar cooling unit error codes, read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

## Find your code, make by make.

Type the characters exactly as the display shows them, or pick the make. Each code has a page of its own: what it means on that brand, what to check, and what not to do.

### Only confirmed codes

Every code here is taken from the manufacturer's own documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. If yours is not listed, book with the exact characters and the full model number, and we will tell you whether it is one we take.

## Three things before you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

### Copy the display exactly

Write down every character on the controller, or count how many times a light blinks. Take a photo first, because a restart or an outage can clear the code.

02

### Photograph the rating plate

Check the side of the unit's housing, the exhaust end, or the condenser of a split system. The same code means different things from one maker to the next.

03

### Read the thermometer in the room

If the cellar has passed about 70°F, keep the door shut and plan where the best bottles go before anything else. A room still near its setting can wait for a normal slot.

## What each kind of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

[How to read a code](https://winecellarrepair.center/problems/cellar-cooling-unit-error-code/)

### Mode, not a failure

4 codes

Something the controller was told to do, not a part that wore out: a display switched between Fahrenheit and Celsius so 13 looks alarming, a set point or differential changed by someone leaning on the keys, a keypad lock that ignores every press, a standby state left on after a power cut, a reminder that service is due. The unit is fine, and the controller's own keys or its manual put it back.

### Temperature and alarms

17 codes

The controller saw the cellar go past a high or low limit and raised an alarm, sometimes holding the worst reading it logged while the house was empty. The reason can be as small as the cellar door left ajar after a tasting or a long outage, a room gaining heat from new lights or a sunny glass wall, or as serious as cooling that has stopped. Keep the door shut and read a thermometer on a middle rack before touching anything; the alarm is a warning about the collection, not yet a diagnosis.

### Humidity

5 codes

The unit or its hygrometer reads the cellar's air as too dry for the corks or too damp for the labels and the walls. Cooling pulls water out of the air, so a unit that runs long in a leaky room tends to dry it out, while a gap in the vapor barrier, damp ground or a clogged drain can push it the other way. A humidifier or humidity kit, where one is fitted, is checked along with the door seal and the room before a sensor is blamed.

### Sensors and probes

12 codes

The controller has lost a sensible reading from one of its probes: the one sampling the cellar air, the one on the evaporator coil, or on a remote probe the lead that runs out to a rack. With no number it can trust, the unit may chill the room well below 55°F, stop and start every few minutes, or run on without end. A probe unplugged during a rack install, pinched behind a board or sitting in a draft from the door is ruled out before a new one is ordered.

[Er](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/breezaire-er/) [LO](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/breezaire-lo/) [HI](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/breezaire-hi/) [E1](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/cellarcool-e1/) [E2](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/cellarcool-e2/) [P1](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/cellarpro-p1/) [P3](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/cellarpro-p3/) [E1](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/whisperkool-e1/) [E2](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/whisperkool-e2/) [E3](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/whisperkool-e3/) [!3](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/wine-guardian-alarm-3/) [P1](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/wine-mate-p1/)

### Coil icing and defrost

3 codes

The controller found the evaporator coil too cold for too long, or a defrost cycle that did not finish. Ice grows when warm, moist air keeps arriving and the coil cannot shed it: a set point pushed too low, a blocked return, a slow evaporator fan, a low refrigerant charge, or a door that lets the house in. When the ice melts all at once it can overwhelm the drain, so a leak often follows. Switching the unit off to thaw buys time; finding why it iced is the repair.

### Fans and airflow

2 codes

A fan the controller counts on is slow, noisy or stopped. On the cellar side one fan pushes cool air across the racks; on the exhaust side, or in a split system's outdoor condenser, another throws the room's heat away. A rack or a case of wine stacked against the grille, a clogged filter, a dust-caked condenser or a tired capacitor is cleared before a motor is replaced.

[HA2](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/cellarpro-ha2/) [COH](https://winecellarrepair.center/error-codes/whisperkool-coh/)

Usually leads to

### Compressor and pressure

1 code

The sealed system has stepped outside safe limits: a high-pressure switch opened because the heat had nowhere to go, a low-pressure switch opened because refrigerant is short, or the compressor would not start or kept tripping its own overload. Very often the cause is the exhaust side, a closet or garage too hot or too small for the unit, before it is the compressor. Handling refrigerant takes EPA Section 608 certification, and the unit's age weighs heavily on the decision.

### Power and controller

7 codes

The unit saw its supply dip, surge or drop out, or the controller has lost contact with the board it drives. The cause is as often a shared circuit, a tripped GFCI outlet, a loose connection or a storm outage as the unit itself. A breaker that will not stay on or a scorched smell means switching the circuit off at the panel, standing dry and away from the unit, and keeping the cellar door closed until the technician arrives.

## Questions about the codes.

### My cellar controller shows a code with no page here. What now?

We publish a code only when the maker documents it in a manual or on its own support site. Until then, write the code exactly as shown, count any blinks, and put both in the booking form; the technician checks it against your model.

### Does the same code mean the same thing on every cellar unit?

No. One maker uses a code for a high room reading where another uses it for a failed probe, and controllers change between generations of the same unit. Read a code together with the make and, ideally, the model number.

### Can I clear a code on the cellar controller myself?

Often, by acknowledging the alarm on the controller or switching the unit off for a few minutes and letting it restart. If the code stays away, it may have come from a long session in the cellar with the door open; if it returns the same day, something needs looking at. With the room warming, keep the door shut and book rather than resetting it again and again.

### The controller shows a code but the cellar is fine. Is a repair needed?

Not always. Some codes are settings or reminders rather than failures: a display switched to the other temperature scale, a service reminder or a lock on the keys. Those pages explain how to put the setting back without a part.
