# Wine cellar cooling unit guides, read first.

A wine cellar cooling unit repair guide is only useful if it answers the question you actually have, so these are split by what you are trying to find out — is this worth paying for, what is that noise, what can I check myself — rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.

## Work out what you are dealing with.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by what part of the appliance it concerns.

Reading did not fix it?

### The work itself

Every guide here ends in the same place: what a technician actually does about it, in the order it gets done.

10 kinds of work Cheapest cause first What a visit costs

See what we do

Wondering what the repair might cost? That has a page of its own, because a real figure depends on the unit, the room and what the technician measures there — [wine cellar cooling repair cost](https://winecellarrepair.center/cost/).

## Not sure where to start?

A few questions come up on almost every cellar call. Each has a guide written for the owner standing in the room with a thermometer, and some end with a fix that needs no technician.

[Or start from the symptom](https://winecellarrepair.center/problems/)

### The room reads warm and the unit seems to be running Why the cellar will not hold 55°F: the room, the exhaust side or the unit

A quick air test at both grilles shows whether the unit is cooling at all; after that the exhaust room, the door, the vapor barrier and the unit's size each tell their own story.

### The power is out and the racks are full Protecting the Cellar During an Outage: Door Shut, Breaker Off, Thermometer Outside

How long a packed, insulated room holds 55°F, Purdue's 75°F and 86°F lines, switching the unit off before the surge, generators 20 feet out, the restart delay and the cheese that never belonged there.

### Water is running down the wall or onto the floor Why the cellar unit drips water, and which side of the wall it lands on

Water on the cellar floor, down the exhaust-side wall or from a ceiling unit points to different parts of the drain path, and much of it starts with humid air leaking into the room.

### Fix this unit or put in a new one Repair or replace a cellar cooling unit: check the room before the machine

Keeping the collection safe while you decide, which parts are routine at any age, why a hot exhaust space ages compressors and what replacing a split system involves.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in a guide did not settle it, a technician picks up from there. The visit, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://winecellarrepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 The room and the unit, both measured
2. 02 The cause and the figure, before any work
3. 03 Common cellar parts in the van
4. 04 The cellar heading back to 55°F

## When there is no time to read.

These four can let a whole room of bottles creep toward summer heat, or put water from the unit near wiring and outlets. Each page puts the causes in the order worth checking, and says when to stop and book.

## Questions about the guides.

### Can a cellar guide save me a visit?

Sometimes, when the cause is simple, but a guide cannot replace a technician. The guides explain how a cellar unit holds 55°F, why coils ice and walls sweat, and which checks an owner can safely make, so whatever is left can be described clearly when you book. They stop at the grille, the filter, the drain outlet and the controller settings; wiring, the compressor and refrigerant are left to us.

### Are the cellar guides written for one make?

Mostly not. Probes, fans, drains and coils behave much the same whoever built the unit, so the guides are written by kind of system. Where one maker does things differently the guide says so, and your unit's own manual comes first.

### Should I read a guide or a problem page first?

If the cellar is misbehaving today, go to the problem pages, sorted by what you see. The guides are for questions that allow more time: getting a collection through an outage, whether a split system suits your house, or when a new unit makes more sense than another repair.

### Where do the facts in the cellar guides come from?

Each specific claim names its source: the maker's installation or owner's manual, public guidance from the Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the EPA or Ready.gov, or university enology and extension pages for storage temperature and humidity. Anything without a source is our technicians' experience in wine cellars and is offered as that, not as a rule.
