Brownstones with basement rooms that already stay cool, where a small through-the-wall unit tops up the cooling in summer, and the unit's exhaust into an old boiler room or laundry is what most often goes wrong. ## What Brooklyn Heights does to a wine cellar cooling unit. Brownstone rowhouses from before the Civil War make up most of the housing. A typical brownstone rose three or four stories over a basement set a half-flight below the street, where the kitchen and service rooms once were. Brooklyn Heights became a National Historic Landmark District in January 1965 and a New York City Landmark that November. High-rises are rare here; the few include 75 Livingston Street and the Hotel St. George. [All of New York Metro](https://winecellarrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Older housing stock Older houses with stone or brick basements make natural cellars that stay cool, but old masonry wicks moisture from the ground, so a cooling unit there often battles damp and mold more than heat, and the room's vapor barrier is checked first. ### Closet and stair cellars Every opening of a small cellar's door swaps a large share of its air, and a door without a sealed threshold lets the house's warmth in all day, so weatherstripping and a door sweep come before anything inside the unit. ### Mixed housing Where the older half of a mixed block keeps its cellars downstairs, a basement cellar may share air with a furnace room, and a path left open around ducts and pipes lets warm air in, so the room check looks for gaps wherever something crosses the cellar wall. ## A visit in Brooklyn Heights.
