Warehouses and factory lofts from the 1800s and early 1900s grew up around what had been a ferry landing on the East River. ## What DUMBO does to a wine cellar cooling unit. The DUMBO Historic District, on the National Register since 2000, counts 95 contributing buildings once used by makers of paint, coffee, sugar, paper boxes and soap pads. In the late 20th century David Walentas’s firm, Two Trees Management, bought up much of Dumbo and converted it to upscale apartments and offices. The city finished rebuilding the Belgian-block streets of Dumbo and neighboring Vinegar Hill in 2025. [All of New York Metro](https://winecellarrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Tower living A wine room in a tower has to put its heat somewhere the building allows, and a unit whose exhaust ends in a closed utility closet breathes its own warm air until the cellar drifts toward 65, so the first check up here is where that heat really goes. ### Older housing stock Older houses with stone or brick basements make natural cellars that stay cool, but old masonry wicks moisture from the ground, so a cooling unit there often battles damp and mold more than heat, and the room's vapor barrier is checked first. ### On the water Along salt water the air corrodes a cellar unit's condenser coil and fan from the outside in, and a split condenser on a seaside terrace or a through-the-wall unit venting toward the water loses capacity year after year until the cellar cannot hold 55. ## A visit in DUMBO.
