Nearly all of SoHo falls inside the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District, first designated in 1973 and extended in 2010. ## What SoHo does to a wine cellar cooling unit. The district covers 26 blocks and roughly 500 buildings, many with cast-iron fronts, and several of its side streets are still paved in Belgian block. Cast iron let builders cut unusually tall windows and carry high ceilings on slender columns, filling the old industrial floors with daylight. A building code passed in 1899 required cast-iron fronts to be backed with masonry. [All of New York Metro](https://winecellarrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Older housing stock Older houses with stone or brick basements make natural cellars that stay cool, but old masonry wicks moisture from the ground, so a cooling unit there often battles damp and mold more than heat, and the room's vapor barrier is checked first. ### Tower living A wine room in a tower has to put its heat somewhere the building allows, and a unit whose exhaust ends in a closed utility closet breathes its own warm air until the cellar drifts toward 65, so the first check up here is where that heat really goes. ### Closet and stair cellars In a smaller home the cellar is often a converted closet or the space under a stair, and a small room with thin walls gains heat quickly, so the unit's capacity is checked against the room's walls and door before any part is replaced. ## A visit in SoHo.
