Turn the circuit off from a dry panel, leave it off, keep the cellar door shut, and book the visit; a well-built cellar holds its cool for a day or more with the door closed. ## What it usually means. A cellar unit holds a compressor, one or two fan motors, a controller board and a set of wiring connections, often packed into a box set into a wall or above a ceiling where nobody sees them for years. A burning smell usually means one of those parts is running far hotter than it should: a fan motor with seized bearings, a start component overheating, a loose connection that has been arcing at a terminal, or a cord and plug warming at a tired outlet. Dust baked onto a hot condenser coil can smell alarming too, and so can a new unit's first few hours of running. The difference matters little in the moment, because a smell of burning from something built into a wall is never worth waiting out. Cut the power first, from a dry panel, and let the cellar hold its temperature with the door shut while the cause is found.
