Every cellar unit makes some sound: a compressor hum, the rush of two fans, a click when it starts. Through-the-wall units are the loudest by nature, since the whole machine sits in the wall between the cellar and a living space; split and ducted systems move the noisy parts away. A change in the sound is what matters. A fan blade out of balance, dry bearings or a blade touching its shroud makes a grinding or ticking noise. A compressor that has lost its rubber mounts, or a unit resting directly on its wall sleeve without isolation, hums through the framing. A loose panel or grille buzzes at certain speeds, and a copper line touching a stud or another line on a split system rattles whenever it runs.
