Before a cellar unit does anything it needs power at its outlet or hard-wired circuit, a controller that is awake, and a call for cooling from that controller. A unit that stays completely dead is usually missing the first of those: a tripped breaker or GFCI, a loose plug, a switch in the cellar that someone turned off, or a remote controller that lost its connection. If the controller lights but nothing runs, the room may already be at the set point, the unit may be waiting out a built-in delay after a power cut, or a sensor may be telling it the room is cold. Only after those are ruled out does it point to the controller board, its transformer, or wiring inside the unit. A cellar without cooling is not an emergency on the first day if the door is shut, but watch the thermometer, because on a hot week the room will not stay cool for long. Why? Most units wait out a protective delay before the compressor starts, and some come back in standby rather than running. Give it a quarter of an hour. If the controller is dark or the compressor never starts, the outage may have damaged the board. ### Is the wall switch in my cellar supposed to control the unit? Some installers wire the unit to a switch, and it gets turned off with the lights by accident.
