# Wine cellar cooling unit types, told apart.

A cellar can be kept cool by four quite different machines. A through-the-wall unit trades air between the cellar and the room behind it, a ducted unit sits in an attic or a closet and breathes into the cellar through ducts, a split system parts the quiet evaporator from a condenser placed outside, and a ceiling-mounted unit tucks the whole job overhead. Tell us which one serves your cellar and a good part of the diagnosis is settled before the technician arrives.

## Four types, each its own job.

Each one is built, reached and repaired differently. Open yours for what fails on it and what the work involves.

### Through-the-wall cellar cooling unit

A self-contained box set into an opening in the cellar wall: its cold face blows into the wine room, and its warm face breathes out into the room next door.

### Ducted cellar cooling unit

A self-contained cooling unit placed outside the cellar, in a mechanical room, attic or basement, that sends chilled air in and takes return air back through insulated ducts.

### Split-system cellar cooling

An evaporator inside or beside the cellar and a condensing unit outside or in another room, joined by an insulated copper line set and charged on site.

### Ceiling-mounted cellar cooling

A cooling unit hung in the cellar ceiling or set into the space above it, so only a grille shows, with its heat sent into the space above or ducted away.

Not sure which you have?

### Start from what it is doing

If the wine cellar cooling unit in your cellar does not obviously match one of these, work from the symptom instead. It reaches the same answer from the other end.

## Which one is yours?

One look at the wine cellar cooling unit usually settles it. The first sign of each type is on the right; its page has the rest, and what that type means for a repair.

[Through-wall, ducted or split](https://winecellarrepair.center/guides/through-wall-ducted-or-split-system/)

### Through-the-wall Through-the-wall cellar cooling unit

One rectangular grille, often near the ceiling, sits flush in a cellar wall, and on the far side of that same wall a second grille of the same size faces another room.

### Ducted Ducted cellar cooling unit

Inside the cellar there are only grilles, one supply and one return, in the ceiling or high on the walls, and no machine sound comes from the room itself.

### Split system Split-system cellar cooling

Inside the cellar a slim evaporator hangs on a wall or a grille sits in the ceiling, and you hear only a fan when it runs.

### Ceiling-mounted Ceiling-mounted cellar cooling

The only thing visible in the cellar is a square or rectangular grille in the ceiling, often with supply slots on one side and a return opening on the other.

## What a repair usually costs.

Weigh a cellar repair against two things: what a new system for the same room would take to install, and the collection sitting in that room. Fans, drains, probes, pumps and humidifier parts are a small share of either, and so is most sealed-system work on a split system or a unit built into finished walls. The harder call comes with an older through-the-wall unit that needs a compressor or a second leak repair, or a unit that was never large enough for its room; there the technician puts repair, replacement and any room fix side by side.

| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Start capacitor, contactor, compressor or sealed-system restriction](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-compressor-and-sealed-system-repair/) | moderate to highest | A capacitor, relay or contactor is a small part reached once the unit's panel is off. A new compressor, or clearing a restriction with brazing, a drier, a vacuum and a weighed charge, sits near the top of the scale, and more so when the unit must come out of a wall or a ceiling. |
| [Leak search, joint or coil repair and a weighed charge](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-refrigerant-leak-repair/) | highest | Finding the leak, repairing it, evacuating and charging by weight is the most involved work a cellar unit takes. A long line set or a leak hidden behind a finished wall adds hours; a leak at a service valve on an outdoor unit is the quicker end. |
| [Evaporator or condenser fan motor, blade or capacitor](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-evaporator-and-condenser-fan-repair/) | low to moderate | A fan motor and its blade or capacitor are modest parts on most units. Reaching the cellar-side fan on a ceiling unit, or an outdoor fan on a roof or a tight pad, adds a little time. |
| [Air or coil probe, display, transformer or control board](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-controller-and-sensor-repair/) | moderate | A probe or a fuse is a small repair. A control board or a remote display made for one make of cellar unit costs more and sometimes has to be ordered, and a long cable run to a wall display can add time. |
| [Drain line, drain pan or condensate pump](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-condensate-drain-and-pump-repair/) | low | Clearing and flushing a drain line is quick work. A new condensate pump, a replacement pan or rerouting a line that has no slope sits a little higher, and a pan in a ceiling reached from an attic takes longer. |
| [Thawing an iced coil and correcting its cause](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-coil-icing-and-defrost-repair/) | low to moderate | The thaw and a setting or probe change stay low. When the cause turns out to be a fan or a leak, that repair is priced on its own row. |
| [Line set section, insulation or control cable](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/split-system-line-set-repair/) | moderate to highest | Reinsulating an exposed length or fixing the control cable is moderate work. Replacing a crushed or leaking section inside a wall or under a deck means cutting in, brazing, evacuating and charging, and sits near the top. |
| [Humidifier module, humidity probe or settings](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-humidity-control-repair/) | low to moderate | Cleaning a scaled pad, freeing a valve or changing fan and differential settings is low on the scale. A new humidifier module or a separate humidifier with its water line is a step up. |
| [Cooling load and room survey](https://winecellarrepair.center/services/cellar-cooling-load-and-room-check/) | lowest | The survey itself is a measured visit with a thermal camera and a written list. Any insulation, vapor barrier or door work it points to is done by the right trade and priced separately. |

## Questions about the types.

### Which cellar cooling systems does this site cover?

Through-the-wall units set in an opening between the cellar and the next room, ducted units that sit outside the cellar and feed it through ducts, split systems with the evaporator in the cellar and the condenser outdoors, and ceiling-mounted units. A glass-front cabinet that stores wine in a kitchen, and a unit meant for cans and drinks, each have a sister site.

### Is a through-the-wall unit repaired differently from a split system?

Yes. A through-the-wall unit is one sealed package that can often be pulled from its sleeve, but it depends entirely on the room behind it to take its heat. A split system has a line set joining two halves, so a leak can be anywhere along it and handling refrigerant takes EPA Section 608 certification. A ducted unit adds duct runs and grilles that can choke its airflow.

### Why does the room behind a through-the-wall unit matter so much?

Because that is where all the cellar's heat goes. If the exhaust side opens into a closet, a small utility room or a garage that bakes in summer, the unit breathes its own hot air back in, runs longer, and eventually trips on high pressure or stops cooling. Makers set a minimum size and a maximum temperature for that space in their installation manuals.

### What about my cellar helps the technician most?

The kind of unit, the make, a rough age, the size of the room, and where the heat goes: a closet, a garage, an attic or a condenser outside. Add whether the cellar has glass walls or a glass door. With that the technician loads the right parts and books a long enough slot.
