A ceiling-mounted unit saves wall space for racks and keeps the machine out of sight. Some models hang from the joists with a grille flush in the cellar ceiling and blow cold air sideways across the room; others sit entirely above the ceiling, in a joist bay or the floor space of the room above, and reach the cellar only through supply and return openings. Either way the heat has to go somewhere, into an attic, a mechanical space or a duct to the outside of the cellar, and that space has to stay within the maker's limits. Gravity is the challenge with this type: the condensate pan sits right above bottles, racks and sometimes a finished wood ceiling, so a blocked drain or a failed condensate pump shows up as a drip onto the collection. Service begins by opening the grille, looking at the pan and the drain, and checking where the exhaust heat is actually going before the refrigeration parts are tested. Slime in the pan, a drain line with no slope or a pump whose float sticks lets water rise and spill, and it falls onto racks, labels and the floor below. ### Heat trapped above the ceiling The exhaust side often discharges into an attic or a joist space. A hot attic, blocked vents or insulation packed against the unit leave the condenser breathing hot air, and it trips on overload or never brings the cellar down. ### A fan that is hard to hear With the machine above the ceiling, a failing fan often goes unnoticed until the cellar warms. Dust on the wheel, a dry bearing or a loose mount turns into a slow fan, then a stopped one. ### Sweating around the grille A gap between the grille and the ceiling, or missing insulation around the unit's frame, lets warm, humid air meet cold metal. Where do I start? Move the bottles and any cardboard cases from under it and catch the water in a tray. If it is near a light fixture or wiring, switch that circuit off at a dry panel.
