Wine Guardian wine cellar cooling units,
specifically.

Wine Guardian builds through-the-wall units, ducted self-contained units, ducted and ductless split systems and a ceiling-mounted evaporator, most of them run from a remote interface wired back to the unit's board. Its alarms arrive as an exclamation mark with a number or as a flashing reading, so we start by reading the screen, then follow the air, the drain and the cable.

The Wine Guardian lineup

What is particular
to Wine Guardian.

We see Wine Guardian through-the-wall TTW units, ducted D-series and water-cooled WC models, ducted split DS and WGS systems, ductless split and ceiling-mounted CS models, and the newer Sentinel and Pro series. The model on the rating plate decides where the reset switch sits and which manual applies.

Exclamation-mark alarm codes

The remote interface reports four numbered alarms, !1 to !4, beside flashing temperature and humidity readings. Two of them (!1 and !2) stop the whole system, while !3 and !4 let it keep cooling, and that split tells us how quickly the cellar is losing ground.

A pressure switch you reset by hand

Every Wine Guardian carries a high-pressure switch with a red reset button that stays tripped until someone presses it. Pressing it without clearing the reason, usually a dusty filter or a blocked duct or grille, only buys a few hours.

A remote interface on a long cable

The controller usually sits in the cellar or a hallway on a 4-wire RJ9 cable, and the board powers it through that cable. Dashes on the screen or a !4 alarm send us to the cable, the plug receptacle and the board connector before any sealed-system test.

Air-cooled and water-cooled ducted units

Beside the usual air-cooled models, Wine Guardian sells ducted units that reject heat to a water loop through a regulating valve. On those, a warm cellar can start with the water supply or a valve full of sediment rather than the refrigeration circuit.

Parts

Filters, sensors and remote interface cables are generally quick to source; compressors, coils and main control boards are matched to the model and serial number and can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

A Wine Guardian that trips on pressure or drain alarms is almost always worth repairing, since the usual causes are airflow, a filter or a drain line. A failed compressor on an older through-the-wall unit is the one case where we lay out repair and replacement side by side.

Questions about
Wine Guardian wine cellar cooling units.

What does !1 mean on a Wine Guardian remote?
It means the high-pressure switch has shut the system down. The switch has to be reset by hand after the airflow problem that tripped it, usually a clogged condenser filter or a blocked duct, is cleared.
Why does my Wine Guardian remote show dashes instead of a temperature?
Dashes mean the remote interface has lost contact with the control board inside the unit. A wireless remote may simply be too far away; a wired one points at the cable, its connectors or the power the board sends up the cable.
Can a Wine Guardian hold humidity in the cellar?
The remote always displays relative humidity, but the system only raises it when a Wine Guardian humidifier is connected. Without one, the reading is information only, and a dry cellar needs a humidifier or a look at how long the fan runs.
How often should the filter on a Wine Guardian be cleaned?
Wine Guardian ties it to how dusty the room is, and its maintenance schedule has you check the filter monthly or quarterly. The filter is reusable and washes under warm water.
