Breezaire wine cellar cooling units,
specifically.

Breezaire runs its WKL through-the-wall units and its WKSL split systems from the same Sentry III controller, so both families report trouble with the same short set of display codes. A Breezaire visit starts by reading that controller, then follows the warm air: where the exhaust goes, and whether the room around the bottles is sealed well enough for the unit to win.

The Breezaire lineup

What is particular
to Breezaire.

We work on WKL through-the-wall units from the 1060 to the 8000, WKSL 2200 and 4000 split systems, and older WK, WKE and WKS units still cooling cellars. The older WKS splits ran on R12 with a manual thermostat, so they are tested differently from a WKSL with its Sentry III.

No ducts on either side

Breezaire builds its units to move air freely and says they are not meant to have ductwork on the warm or the cold side. When a Breezaire runs warm, we look for a duct, a louvered door or a closet that has been put between the unit and fresh air before we open the unit.

Three clear feet at the exhaust

The warm grille needs at least 3 feet of open air, and Breezaire names laundry rooms, closets, garages, attics and humid basements as poor places to exhaust into. Heat that cannot escape comes back as a warm cellar, which the Sentry III eventually reports as OH.

A four-reading health check

Breezaire's test is simple: air leaving the cold side should be at least 6°F cooler than the air going in, and the exhaust should blow warm. We take those readings early, because they tell a room problem from a unit problem within minutes.

Openings sized since 1985

Breezaire has kept its self-contained housings at the dimensions of the 1985 originals, so a WKL can take the place of an older WK or WKE in the same hole in the wall. The WKSL 2200 split is the exception, since its housings changed size when it replaced the WKS 2200.

Parts

Sentry III controllers fit every current WKL and WKSL, and Breezaire shows owners how to swap one. Replacement WKSL air handlers and condensers are sold only against a current serial number, so the label on the hot side of a WKL, or behind the grille of a WKSL, is the first thing we photograph.

Repair or replace

A WKL with a controller, sensor or fan problem is usually worth fixing, and if its sealed system is gone, a new WKL fits the same opening. On a WKSL, a failed condensing unit or air handler can often be replaced on its own, leaving the other half and the line set in place.

Questions about
Breezaire wine cellar cooling units.

Can ductwork be added to a Breezaire cellar unit?
No. Breezaire says ducts restrict the airflow its units rely on, and it points owners toward a WKSL split where the warm side cannot vent freely. A duct someone has already added is one of the first things we take off when a Breezaire cannot hold the cellar at its setpoint.
Why is water coming out of my Breezaire?
Breezaire's view is that the unit only removes moisture that the room lets in. An overflow points to a gap in the vapor barrier, a door that does not seal, or new wood and concrete still drying out, and the pull-down drain tube is meant as a temporary outlet while that source is found.
How often does a Breezaire condenser need cleaning?
The WKL and WKSL instructions ask for an inspection and cleaning every 3 months, using a vacuum with a brush attachment. Breezaire units have no filters, so the condenser coil on the hot side is the one routine job left to the owner.
Does outside service affect Breezaire's coverage on my unit?
Breezaire states that the service companies it lists are not affiliated with it and that using them voids the rest of its coverage. On a newer unit, check with Breezaire before booking; once that period is over, book a visit and we will start with the controller and the exhaust side.
