Wine-Mate wine cellar cooling units,
specifically.

Wine-Mate is Vinotemp's cellar cooling line, and it covers almost every layout a cellar can have: HZD units through a wall, HZD-DE units that duct their hot air away, SSH splits that duct cold air into the room, and SSD and SSO splits on or above the ceiling. Most of them share one five-button controller, so a Wine-Mate visit starts with its alarms and its stored settings.

The Wine-Mate lineup

What is particular
to Wine-Mate.

We work on self-contained HZD, HTD, low-profile and slim units, the ducted HZD-DE and the customizable 4510-series HZD, and the SSH, SSL, SSD, SSO, SSR and SSW split systems, including water-cooled versions marked WC. The letters after the capacity number tell us whether ducts, a ceiling evaporator or a remote condenser are part of the visit.

Defrost and humidity you can adjust

The Wine-Mate controller lets an owner change the defrost interval, the defrost length and how long the fan keeps running after the compressor stops, which is how Wine-Mate raises humidity. An iced coil or a dry cellar is sometimes a setting that was changed, so we read the parameters before replacing anything.

Ducts on some models, never on others

A standard HZD must have no ducts at all, an HZD-DE can duct its hot air up to 50 ft in total, and an SSH evaporator is built to push cold air through ducts. Ducts on the wrong model, or ducts without insulation, are a common thread in warm Wine-Mate cellars and dripping ceilings.

Condensers far from the cellar

Wine-Mate split condensing units can sit up to 75 ft from the cellar, and models ending in LA carry a low ambient kit for spots that drop below 50°F. We confirm which version is installed before judging a split that stops cooling in cold weather.

Its own circuit, and no GFI

The HZD manual calls for a dedicated 20 amp circuit on the smaller units and 30 amp on the larger ones, and it says not to put the unit on a GFI outlet. When a self-contained Wine-Mate keeps losing power, the wiring is checked against those notes before the unit is opened.

Parts

Vinotemp sells Wine-Mate controllers, bottle probes and duct kits as separate parts, so the common control and airflow parts can usually be sourced. Compressors, coils and other sealed-system parts on the splits are matched to the model and serial and confirmed at the first visit.

Repair or replace

A Wine-Mate with a probe alarm, a stuck fan or a controller problem is usually worth repairing, because those parts are sold on their own. For a self-contained unit with a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor, a new unit in the same opening often beats opening the sealed system, while on a split the failed section alone can usually be repaired.

Questions about
Wine-Mate wine cellar cooling units.

Why does my Wine-Mate show a blinking compressor light but not start?
The controller is sitting out its anti-short-cycle delay, 10 minutes by default, which protects the compressor after it stops. Give it the full delay; if it still does not start, book a visit.
Can ducts be added to a Wine-Mate?
Only on certain models. The standard HZD manual rules out ducts on every side, while HZD-DE units take ducts on the hot side and SSH splits are designed to deliver cold air through ducts, so the model letters decide what is allowed.
How do I raise the humidity in a cellar cooled by a Wine-Mate?
Wine-Mate uses the Fon setting, which keeps the evaporator fan running after the compressor stops, to raise humidity. Watch the result on a separate hygrometer, and keep in mind that a room with air leaks will still dry out.
How often should a Wine-Mate condenser be cleaned?
Wine-Mate asks for a cleaning at least every 6 months, using a condenser brush or a vacuum with an extended attachment. On a self-contained unit the coil sits on the side that draws in room air.
