What the split-system cellar line set repair
involves.
On a split cellar system the line set is the long part nobody sees: a larger insulated suction line that carries cool vapor back to the compressor, a smaller liquid line that feeds the coil, and a low-voltage cable for the controls, all running through walls, crawl spaces, ceilings and sometimes under a patio. Problems with it look like problems with the machine. Insulation that has split, been chewed or soaked through lets the suction line pick up heat, so the cellar takes longer to cool and the line sweats onto whatever lies beneath it. A kink from a remodel or a crushed section under a deck cuts flow. Brazed joints and flare nuts made on site can seep, and a line set that is too long, too small or climbs too high for the maker's limits can trap oil and starve the compressor. The technician traces the run as far as it can be reached, reads temperatures and pressures at each end, repairs or replaces damaged sections, reinsulates and seals the wall penetrations, and then evacuates and charges the system by weight.
How the visit goesWhat it usually costsModerate to highest · Line set section, insulation or control cable
Reinsulating an exposed length or fixing the control cable is moderate work. Replacing a crushed or leaking section inside a wall or under a deck means cutting in, brazing, evacuating and charging, and sits near the top.

Watch the system run from both ends, and hand you a note of the line length and the charge for the next service.
Trace the lines and the control cable from the cellar evaporator to the condensing unit, as far as walls and ceilings allow.
Read temperatures and pressures at both ends to show whether the lines are losing heat, leaking or restricted.
Check the insulation, the wall penetrations and every reachable joint, and test the control cable end to end.
Repair or replace the damaged section, reinsulate the suction line and seal the penetrations, then evacuate and charge by weight.

All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Where a Tampa Bay split system's condenser sits on a pad outside, hurricane debris and lawn crews can crush the line set insulation or kink the copper, so the repair inspects the full run, replaces damaged insulation and pressure-tests the lines.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
An Orlando custom house may route a split system's line set through the attic, where summer heat soaks into copper behind a sun-cracked jacket, and the repair re-insulates the suction line so the cellar gets the cooling the condenser sends.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
In South Florida towers a split system's line set may climb a shaft and cross a ceiling to a condenser on a terrace, and building rules on penetrations and roof work shape any repair, so the visit maps the full route and plans any line replacement with management.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
A New York split system may run its line set several floors from a cellar to a condenser on a roof or in a rear yard, and reaching that run means opening ceilings and shafts, so the visit first tests each section under pressure to find exactly where the trouble lies.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
A Houston line set between a cellar evaporator and a condenser beside the house often crosses a hot attic or a garage wall, and heat soaking into thinly insulated suction line robs the cellar of capacity, so the repair replaces the insulation and seals where the lines enter.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
In a Chicagoland house the line set may cross an unheated space where sweat on the suction line drips into a finished ceiling, and the repair re-insulates the line with a sealed jacket and checks the vapor barrier where the lines pass into the cellar.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
After an earthquake a Los Angeles split system's line set can stretch where it crosses from the house to a condenser on a separate pad, so the repair checks for strain at the service valves, fixes any leak and leaves a loop of slack.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
A San Diego hillside house may place its split condenser well above or below the cellar, and a long vertical line set needs oil traps and a charge matched to its length, so the repair checks the route against the maker's limits before charging.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Split systems suit Bay Area houses where neighbors and local noise rules keep a condenser away from bedrooms, and a line set disturbed by a remodel or a seismic jolt is pressure-tested, evacuated and recharged so the quiet setup cools again.
