What the cellar humidity control repair
involves.

A cellar that is too dry lets corks shrink and wine seep; one that is too damp grows mold on labels, racks and drywall. The cooling unit sits at the center of both, because every hour its coil runs cold it removes water from the air. A unit that is oversized for the room, or set with a narrow differential, runs short, cold cycles and dries the cellar out; a unit that is undersized, or a room with leaks in its vapor barrier, keeps pulling in moist air that the coil never fully removes. Many systems carry a humidifier module or a separate humidifier, which has its own water supply, valve, pad or nozzle and a humidity probe, and those clog with scale and stick. The technician measures the humidity at several places, compares it with the controller's reading, tests the humidity probe and the humidifier, and looks at the fan mode, which on some controllers changes how much water the coil holds back. Where the room is the cause, you get a plain account of which walls, ceiling or door let damp air in, and what would stop it.

How the visit goes

Cellar humidity control repair,
step by step.

Leave the cellar settling toward its window, and tell you what to watch on a hygrometer over the next week.

01

Measure humidity at the unit, in the middle of the room and near the door, and compare them with the controller's reading.

02

Check the humidity probe, the humidifier module or unit, its water supply, valve and pad, and the drain.

03

Review the fan mode, the set point and the differential, which change how much moisture the coil removes.

04

Repair or replace the humidifier part or the probe, correct the settings, and note any gap in the room's vapor barrier.

Wine Cellar Humidity Too Low

4 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. What humidity you see and where the gauge sits
  2. Whether the cellar has a humidifier, built into the unit or separate
  3. Any mold on labels, racks or walls, or corks that have dried or pushed out
  4. Whether the room was built with a vapor barrier and how the door seals

It also answers

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

Cleaning a scaled pad, freeing a valve or changing fan and differential settings is low on the scale. A new humidifier module or a separate humidifier with its water line is a step up.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay's damp climate usually gives a cellar more moisture than it needs, and a room above 70 percent grows mold on labels and racks, so the repair checks the vapor barrier and the unit's run time, since a unit that barely runs removes little water.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando cellars in houses closed up between rentals can drift past 75 percent humidity once the house air conditioning is set high to save power, and the repair checks the unit's run time and the room's seals before the labels start to mold.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a South Florida condo cellar humid air seeps in around the door and around any unsealed outlet or light fixture, and the repair finds those leaks with the unit running, since sealing the room does more for the humidity than any controller setting.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Steam heat dries New York apartments in winter, and a wine room inside one can fall below 50 percent until corks start to dry, so the repair checks the room's seal and adds or services a humidifier where the cooling unit cannot hold the level on its own.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's humidity makes a cellar with a torn vapor barrier sweat inside its walls, and the repair measures moisture in the room and in the wall cavity where it can, since mold behind the racks is a room problem that the unit only brings to light.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland winters dry indoor air sharply, and a basement cellar can fall below 50 percent until corks shrink, so the repair checks the humidifier on the unit or in the room and tests the controller's humidity sensor.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Dry Santa Ana winds pull Los Angeles cellars toward low humidity, and a cellar with gaps around its door loses moisture fastest, so the repair checks the door seal and the humidifier and its water line if the system has one.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Coastal San Diego cellars run damp in the fog of May and June and dry during the Santa Ana winds of fall, and the repair sets the controller's humidity limits and makes sure the humidifier and the drain each work when their season comes.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

A Bay Area cellar in a fog-belt basement can hold high humidity on its own, and mold on racks or labels there often means the unit runs too little to dry the air, so the repair checks the unit's sizing and the air movement around the racks.

Questions about
the cellar humidity control repair.

What humidity should a wine cellar hold?
Most cellars aim for somewhere around 50 to 70 percent, with 60 as a common target. A few points of drift is normal. Long stretches below 50 or above 70 are what to fix.
Why is my cellar so dry when the cooling unit works fine?
A unit that is larger than the room needs, or that cycles often, removes water on every short cycle and dries the air. A room that takes in dry winter air through a door gap does the same. The fix may be a setting, a humidifier or a better seal.
There is mold on my wine labels. Is the cooling unit to blame?
It can be, if it is too small to keep up or its drain overflows into the room. Often, though, damp air is getting in through a gap in the vapor barrier or a door that does not seal. Wipe the mold, keep the door shut and book a visit that checks both.
